An Announcement Regarding our Upcoming Season

It is with sadness that we inform you that we will no longer be presenting Ain’t That About A– in 2024. We were excited to share this timely work with audiences, but due to a disagreement over hiring decisions, the composer has asked to be released from their contract with us.

Thompson Street Opera Company is rooted in—and constantly working towards—anti-patriarchal and restorative justice principles, to shift opera and the classical arts away from centuries of paternalism. We believe that artists and community partners are true stakeholders in our work. We always welcome suggestions and input made in the spirit of collaboration and artistic integrity.

However, terminating someone after contract, without attempting a restorative process, is inconsistent with our company values. We aim to collaborate with and ultimately come to final decisions with our partners which requires open communication and transparency among all involved parties. Unfortunately, this was not possible in this case. We intend to do what we can to avoid this kind of situation moving forward.

We will still have a show! We want to honor the commitments we made to the artists who were going to bring this work to life. We are currently exploring new programming options, with input from the current cast, and will announce updates about the new show soon.
